A personal injury law firm from the US East Coast opened new offices in Los Angeles and came to us after nine months with a previous agency that produced no results. The firm was running 100 percent on paid search with no organic presence at all. Sixty days after our strategy launched, daily visitors went from under 200 to close to 1,000. This is what happened and why.
The Client Had Two Problems, Not One
A well-established personal injury law firm from the US East Coast was opening new offices in Los Angeles. That market is one of the most competitive in the country for legal services. To make things harder, the firm had already spent nine months with a local agency that kept telling them to wait for results. After nearly a year and no measurable improvement, the firm was getting all of its traffic from paid search. No organic presence, no AI mentions, no local visibility.
When they contacted us, they were cautious. That made sense. We presented a documented plan with specific targets and specific timelines, backed by our written money-back guarantee. For lawyers, a written guarantee carries real weight. That gave them enough confidence to move forward.
The site had very few technical problems. The real issue was the keyword strategy. The previous agency was targeting broad, generic terms: “lawyer in Los Angeles” or just the firm name. For a brand-new office competing against firms with years of local history, those terms were close to impossible to win. The right targets were specific and high-intent: “injury lawyers in Los Angeles,” “personal injury attorney Los Angeles,” and similar phrases where the searcher already knows exactly what they need.
A Five-Front Strategy for SEO for Lawyers
We do not fix one thing and hope for the best. SEO for lawyers in a competitive market requires simultaneous work across several areas. Fixing keywords without fixing authority does not work. Building authority without fixing local signals does not work either. All five fronts had to move together.
1. Local SEO The Los Angeles office needed its own local presence, completely separate from the East Coast headquarters. Because it was a branch, we had to make sure Google and AI systems understood it as a distinct entity with its own authority in the California market, not a satellite of a firm three thousand miles away.
2. Authority building The firm had strong domain authority overall, but it pointed to the East Coast location. We built a credible, independent authority signal for Los Angeles through local citations, relevant external mentions, and targeted backlinks from California-based sources.
3. Technical SEO Existing issues were minor and we resolved them quickly. We also added structured data to automate the import of case results and client outcomes. This gave the site a continuous feed of fresh, specific, and credible content that both Google and AI systems could extract and cite directly.
4. Branding Several of the firm’s senior partners had physically relocated from the East Coast to Los Angeles. That track record existed. We made sure it was clearly communicated across the site and in all external signals, so the new office carried the credibility the firm had built over years.
5. AEO and AI growth This was the piece that created the most leverage. We built a deliberate strategy to get the firm cited in AI-generated answers on ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews for personal injury queries in Los Angeles. This ran in parallel from day one, not as an afterthought.
Research showed that competing firms were already appearing in AI answers, but inconsistently, across different queries and different platforms. That pattern meant none of them had a deliberate AI growth strategy. They were being mentioned because of their Google rankings, not because of any intentional GEO or AEO work. A firm with a real AI growth strategy would not appear occasionally. It would become the default answer for personal injury legal help in Los Angeles.
What the Data Showed
Preparation took about two months before launch, which is longer than usual. This project was complex enough to deserve that extra time. Most campaigns launch in four to six weeks.
Early results came in roughly as expected. AI mentions grew at a steady rate and overall traffic grew in proportion. That is the healthy pattern for a well-structured campaign. Then, about 60 days after the strategy went live, something accelerated.

Organic traffic started growing exponentially, not gradually. A few days after that, AI referrals jumped beyond what we had projected. The two movements were not a coincidence.
The work needed to earn consistent AI mentions uses the same signals Google rewards: structured content, topical depth, local relevance, and credible external references. When those signals hit a threshold, Google moved the site from deep in the results to the first page, including multiple top-five positions on key personal injury terms. AI systems that pull from Google and Bing then started citing the firm far more often. More citations brought more visibility. More visibility improved rankings further.
AI growth and SEO for lawyers are not separate problems. A well-executed AI growth strategy builds the exact signals that Google cares about. Better Google rankings expose the site to AI systems that browse search results. Those systems cite the brand more often. That drives more traffic and more authority. The cycle feeds itself without additional spend.
The Numbers in Plain Language
The firm went from fewer than 200 daily visitors, almost entirely from paid search, to close to 1,000 daily visitors from organic search and AI referrals. That is roughly five times the traffic in 60 days from launch. The chart above includes zero PPC traffic. The firm has not stopped paid search, but the plan is to cut that budget by around 75 percent and let organic carry the load going forward.
On Google, the site went from page 10 and beyond on target keywords to first-page positions on most of them, including multiple top-five spots on personal injury terms in Los Angeles. Those rankings are the foundation that the AI growth numbers are built on.
“A good AI growth strategy leads to better SEO. Better SEO then improves AI growth further. Run together, they reinforce each other continuously.”
What This Means for SEO for Lawyers
Legal is one of the most competitive verticals in search. Established firms have years of authority, local reviews, and backlinks. A new location cannot win by doing the same things better. It has to find where the established players have gaps.
In this case, the gap was AI. None of the competing firms had a deliberate presence in AI-generated answers. They relied on their organic rankings and got mentioned by luck. A firm that builds that presence on purpose, with a structured AEO and GEO strategy, does not compete for scraps. It becomes the default citation. And once AI systems associate a brand with a category in a specific location, they keep citing it, because consistency is exactly what those systems look for.
That is what happened here. And the results are still growing.
